5 payroll mistakes that cost Ghanaian businesses
8 June 2026 · 6 min read
Payroll feels routine until something goes wrong. These five mistakes are the ones we see most often — and each one is avoidable.
1. Miscalculating SSNIT contributions
SSNIT has two tiers, and both must be calculated and remitted correctly. Getting the split wrong, or missing Tier 2, creates liabilities that surface during audits.
2. Filing PAYE late
PAYE deducted from staff must be remitted to the GRA on time. Late remittance attracts penalties and interest, and the amounts grow with your payroll.
3. Misclassifying workers
Treating contractors as employees, or the reverse, affects tax and SSNIT obligations. Get the classification right from the start to avoid disputes.
4. Weak payslips and records
Employees are entitled to clear payslips, and you need solid records for compliance and financing. Poor documentation causes problems exactly when you can least afford them.
5. Doing it all manually
Spreadsheets are error-prone. Proper payroll software — or an outsourced payroll service — removes the guesswork and keeps you compliant every cycle.
