2026 VAT filing deadlines every Ghanaian SME should know
12 June 2026 · 5 min read
Value Added Tax (VAT) is one of the most common reasons Ghanaian businesses run into trouble with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). The rules are not complicated, but the deadlines are strict and penalties add up fast.
When VAT returns are due
VAT returns are filed monthly. Your return and payment for each month are due by the last working day of the following month. For example, your January VAT return is due by the end of February.
- File even if you made no sales — a nil return is still required.
- Late filing attracts a penalty plus interest on any tax due.
- Keep your sales and purchase records reconciled so your input and output VAT are accurate.
Who must register
If your taxable turnover exceeds the GRA threshold, registration is mandatory. Many growing businesses cross the threshold without realising it — and registering late can mean back-taxes.
How to stay ahead
Set a recurring reminder a week before each deadline, keep your bookkeeping current, and reconcile monthly. If you would rather not think about it at all, our team files on your behalf and keeps you fully compliant.
